The purpose of the foundation level is to confirm that a candidate has sufficient knowledge and understanding of the P3O guidance to interact effectively with, or act as an informed member of, an office within a P3O model.  The foundation qualification is a pre-requisite for the Practitioner qualification.

The course:

  • Introduces the concepts of Portfolios, Programmes and Projects and the structures that support them.
  • Gives an understanding of different P3O® models, functions and services with supporting roles and responsibilities.
  • Introduces the P3O® lifecycle and operational tools and techniques.

Exam Format

  • Multiple choice
  • 75 questions per paper - 70 live questions and 5 trial
  • 35 marks required to pass (out of 70 available) - 50%
  • 60 minutes duration
  • Closed book.
Please note that there is preparatory work required prior to the course and evening homework during the course.

The course covers:

  • Introduction to P3Os - Discussing why, when and how to use P3O models including the difference between portfolio, programmes and project environments and their different requirements
  • Value - What value P3Os can bring to the organisation including a business case, funding models and performance measures
  • Model - An overview of the different P3O models with examples; Functions and Techniques - Details on the functions/services and techniques/tools used by units of a P3O model

P3O - Portfolio, programme and project offices

This is a three day instructor-led course with the Re-registration Practitioner exam on the afternoon of the last day. All P3O Practitioners wishing to retain their registered status will need to be re-registered within 3-5 calendar years of their original certification.  All certified Practitioners have the opportunity to take this re-registration exam in order to demonstrate professional development.  This is particularly important when the official guidance changes.

Attendance includes a day during the foundation course eg. the second day, then the Practitioner portion (last two days) of the course.

The purpose of this certification is to re-confirm that you have sufficient knowledge and understanding of the P3O guidance to design, implement, manage or work in any component office within a P3O model.

Re-registration Exam Format

  • Objective testing
  • 2 questions per paper, 40 marks available in total
  • 20 marks required to pass  - 50%
  • One 1/2 hours duration (90 minutes)
  • Open-book (only the P3O Guide is allowed).
